From new trends
to new seasons, VOGUE magazine is a fashion icon of it’s own. With million upon
millions of subscribers waiting each month to receive the new issue, VOGUE has
the power to tell fashionistas everywhere what is hot and what is not.
As a celebrity, it is a true honor
and privilege to be given the task of being on the cover of VOGUE. As some
people may not like particular celebrities, the audience will vary depending on
who’s on the cover. For the December 2010 issue of VOGUE, Angelina Jolie took
the cover.
The first thing you see by looking
at the magazine is the celebrity. Because of that fact you already know the
celebrity’s fans will be first to buy the issue. Angelina Jolie is a celebrity
with a wide range of fans. From fans that idolize her for her volunteer work in
foreign countries to people who adore her acting, all of her fans will be eager
to buy the magazine. On the left side of the cover, you see that she will also
be talking about being a mother of six kids. Many mothers will buy the magazine
because they want to be able to relate to someone with multiple kids; it makes
them feel not alone. People, mainly her fans, will be dying to read what she
has to say whether if its kids, marriage, movie projects, or new organizations
she volunteers for; that’s their only purpose for buying the magazine.
Aside from Angelina Jolie’s fans,
you will also see a large array of VOGUE fans that just want the fashion
advice. In the lower right hand corner,
you see a list, “Shiny Shoes and Bags, Sparkling Metallic Makeup”. The fashion
world will see this and be curious as to what VOGUE is talking about.
Knowing how their customers will
react to a particular item on the cover will make a significant number change
in sales for VOGUE; and that’s all the more reason why they chose Angelina
Jolie. They are aware of her fan base and how many people would buy the
magazine just because she’s on the cover. Not only do they know how to choose
their celebrities but they also know how to make the cover very feminine and
fashionable.
By looking at the magazine, it is
safe to say it is a fashion magazine because of the “Holiday Fashion” label and
the description of clothing on the lower right hand side. They use pink letters
for a font type because it announces to readers that this is a feminine
magazine. The blue background brings out the color in Angelina Jolie’s eyes
making her more gorgeous and feminine, attracting readers. Last but not least,
they show the corset going down Angelina’s backside to display the sexiness of
the magazine and the sexy apparel you may find inside.
VOGUE is respected worldwide by the
fashion industry. Their phenomenal marketing program knows how to attract
customers and how to make them subscribe to their magazine.
I absolutely love this cover. The person, the layout, the colors-everything just seems to flow together nicely. So many women of all ages turn to this magazine for fashion advice, so it is important for Vogue to choose a cover model that can appeal to many girls. Being Angelina Jolie, I don't think that was a huge problem. She has a classic look, so many girls can relate to her through different points of view. As you mentioned above, she has done volunteer work and adopted kids from various places which contributes to her wide fan base too. The fact that she is so relatable is highly marketable. Her fans will be so interested in hearing about her many different cultural experiences and many fashion tips. I like how you focused not only on the celebrity, but on the side details too. These side stories are equally as important as the main story sometimes because they can touch the reader just as much, just as your example of the mother with six kids suggests. The last thing you did that I really liked was the fact that you talked about color. Designing a magazine cover has so much to do with design and placement and things of that nature so i loved how you commented on her eyes standing out because of the background. It was nice to see someone notice a detail many may not have picked up on.
