Placed in the Hayden Butte Preserve, Arizona State University’s Sun Devil Stadium is one of a kind. Steve Patterson, ASU’s athletic director, has even claimed it to be “one of the iconic spots in all of college football”. However, along with the stadiums unique and genuine beauty is one flaw; the stadium is too large.
A few years back, ASU once shared the field with the Arizona Cardinals. Because the Arizona Cardinals is an NFL team, they have more fans; therefore, they need more seating than a collegiate team. During the construction days of Sun Devil Stadium, it was designed to hold the number of fans who were in attendance to both team activities. Now that the Cardinals have their own stadium, ASU does not need the extra space that has been provided.
New head coach, Todd Graham, and athletic director, Steve Patterson, have been in collaboration hoping to find ways to put Arizona State football back on the map. One way they hope to do so is by renovating Sun Devil Stadium. However, renovations cost money and lots of it. Craig Morgan stated in his article, “While Patterson said putting an estimated cost on the project would be premature, given all variables, sources have said it could be upwards of $300 million”. By making this statement, Morgan reaches out to his audience, announcing that ASU needs help. He hopes there is a donator in his audience that would be more than willing to lend a helping hand.
Craig Morgan has every intention of drawing the attention of ASU Alumni, fans, athletes, and even members of the ASU booster club when writing this article. However, his audience will divide into two groups. One group would be elated to help the cause because they believe the renovation is a great way for the university to expand. They also see it as a great opportunity to help their fellow Sun Devils. The other side of the audience will value tradition and the original stadium. In result, they will most likely believe that making renovations to the stadium is destroying years of tradition, therefore, they would not support the cause.
At the end of the day, each side of the audience will want what is best for the football team. With that being said, Morgan tries to gain support from the non-supporting half by persuading them this is the best solution with quotes from Coach Graham and Steve Patterson. If the audience reads the words that came out of the mouths of these significant people, they may reconsider their perspective on the situation. The audience may have faith in the coach and the athletic director and may believe these two men know the program better than everyone else.
Based off the social context of this article, the readers and writer can understand one another more clearly. For example, Morgan did not need to provide background information for which the audience is familiar with it. Besides, they all have one common interest, Arizona State University.
